Gold Calculator USA · melt & scrap value

About Us

What this site is for, how the numbers are produced, and what we will not do.

Why this site exists

Most people who sell gold do it once or twice in a lifetime, usually after a bereavement, a divorce or a bad month. They walk into a shop with no idea what the metal in their hand is worth, and they accept the first number they hear. The gap between an informed seller and an uninformed one is routinely hundreds of dollars on a single visit.

Gold Calculator USA closes that gap. It gives you the melt value before you go in, in the units the buyer will use, and a realistic estimate of what that type of buyer typically pays. Free, no account, no email required.

How the numbers are produced

Every dollar figure on the site comes from one calculation: weight converted to troy ounces, multiplied by the karat purity fraction, multiplied by the spot price per troy ounce. Nothing is rounded until it reaches the screen.

The constants used are the standard international definitions:

  • 1 troy ounce = 31.1034768 grams
  • 1 pennyweight = 1.55517384 grams (one twentieth of a troy ounce)
  • 1 grain = 0.06479891 grams
  • 1 standard (avoirdupois) ounce = 28.349523125 grams
  • Karat purity = karat ÷ 24, so 14K = 0.58333

Traditional units — tola, tael, baht, mithqal, chi — use the values in general commercial use in the US for jewelry originating from those markets. Regional variants exist, so if a piece was sold to you by weight in one of these units, confirm the local definition your seller used.

Where the price comes from

The spot price shown on the board is an indicative, delayed reference price for XAU/USD, refreshed on a short cycle and cached on our server so page traffic never depends on a live upstream call. It is a reference figure, not a dealing quote. A dealer's actual bid and ask will straddle it, and the spread they charge is their business, not ours to predict.

The market status indicator tracks the COMEX gold session in New York time: open from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon, with a short daily settlement break. When the market is closed, the last traded price is held on screen.

Where the payout percentages come from

The buyer payout ranges — pawn shop, jeweler, mail-in buyer, refinery — are typical observed bands for the US market, not guarantees. They exist to give you a sense of whether an offer is inside normal territory. A specific shop may pay above or below its band depending on volume, karat, competition in your town and how much they want your business that day. Always get more than one quote.

What we do not do

  • We do not buy or sell gold, and we take no commission on any transaction.
  • We do not recommend individual dealers, refiners or pawn shops.
  • We do not give investment advice, forecast prices or suggest when to buy or sell.
  • We do not publish invented ratings, testimonials or review counts.
  • We do not ask for or store the details of the items you value here — calculations run in your browser and nothing you type is sent to us.

Senior Web Developer · Tools Creator

A senior web developer with over a decade spent building digital tools that make everyday decisions easier. I built Gold Calculator USA to give people a free, transparent way to work out what their gold is actually worth — the same arithmetic a jeweler or refiner uses, laid out so nothing stays hidden.

My focus is free financial tools for the public: calculators, converters and trackers that should never have been put behind a paywall. If a tool stops one person being underpaid for a piece they inherited, it has done its job.

This platform was built from scratch — every price feed, conversion table, chart and calculator is the result of research and testing rather than an off-the-shelf plugin. That is why the numbers can be traced back to their source.

Editorial standards

Content on this site is written and maintained by the Gold Calculator USA editorial team. Formulas and constants are checked against published standards; anything uncertain is labelled as an estimate rather than stated as fact. If you find an error, tell us and we will correct it and note the correction — accuracy on a calculator is the entire product.

How the site is funded

Advertising. The tools are free to use and there is no paid tier, no lead selling and no arrangement with any gold buyer. Advertisers have no influence on the figures the calculator produces or on the payout ranges we publish.
